BRT: A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION FOR MOBILITY IN AFRICA AND THE DEVELOPING WORLD

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and Gautrain are proudly inviting you to the second UATP Congress and Exhibition of African Public Transport that is to be held in Johannesburg from 8 until 11 October 2012. 

The Congress will demonstrate the effectiveness of BRT as an adapted and sustainable solution for mobility in African cities. It will demonstrate the importance of, and need for, the planning, regulating, control and organisation of public transport markets and illustrate the contribution of public transport to the affluence of cities.

There is no doubt that there is a great need for new investment in the African urban public transport sector. This UATP congress will bring the “Johannesburg Declaration”, promoting BRT, to the attention of African policy-makers and institutions, highlighting their significant roles in the implementation of excellent public transport policies. 

Even with the main focus of the congress is on the field of Bus Rapid Transport; the event will also showcase global public transport best practices and enable public transport role-players, professionals and decision makers, from around the world, to exchange knowledge and skills within a single, neutral and hospitable environment. 

I look forward to seeing you at this comprehensive congress to review the state of current African urban public transport systems, as well as to work together and develop and report on best practices in this field.
